Clayton was born in Bassett. He was a farmer and a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Harrisburg. He was a WWII Army Veteran. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. and Dosie Simpson Clayton; four brothers, Douglas Clayton, Cecil Clayton, Nole Clayton and Quillo Clayton, and one sister, Myrtle Hamby.
He is survived by his wife, Leta McGlothlin Clayton of the home; three sisters, Jessie Faye Nienaber, Daisy Cannon and Pauline Kimberlin, all of Memphis; three sons, James Lee Clayton of Hot Springs, Jimmy Lee Clayton of Harrisburg and Johnny Lee Clayton of Trumann; two daughters, Peggy Sue Pierce and Janice Stem of Jonesboro; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Rev. David Mitchell and Rev. Glen Cox officiated at the funeral service. Burial followed the service at Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Larry Wary, Eddie Wary, Jim Hillis, Ray Sharp, Stepehn Cox and Bill Carter. Honorary pallbearer was Floys Hall.
