He was born in Dover, and had lived most of his lifetime in Trumann. He was a mechanic for Melton Brothers John Deer, veteran of the U.S. Army and Korean War and a member of the Viva Drive Church of Christ.
Karnes was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Murray Karnes and his parents, Gus and Eunice Henrietta Murray Karnes.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Lou Karnes of the home; one daughter, Diane and husband, Jack Green of Trumann; one son, Jimmy and wife, Ann Karnes of Trumann; one sister, Janie Karnes Watkins of Cherokee Village; five grandchildren, Dionne (Todd) Haag, Dianna (Erik) Nicholson, Parker (Whitney) Green, Jim Ed (Kim) Karnes and Kari Karnes and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Karnes, Andrew Haag and Gunner Green.
Funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 18 at the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home in Trumann, with Joe Lyons and Bill Willard officiating. Burial followed in the Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery in Jonesboro.
Active pallbearers were Michael Clem, Bobby Manes, Danny Pippinger, Michael Edmonds, Michael Carr and Richard Woodruff.
Honorary pallbearers were Charley Woodruff, James Paul McDaniel, Billy Medley and Phillip Long.
