"Our field drains pretty well," said coach Scott Brown on Friday. "(Assistant) coach (Steve) Edwards worked hard Wednesday night getting the field ready."
Thursday afternoon when the Blytheville Chicks rolled into town, the Wildcats' team was ready as well. The Chicks boasted a formidable 8-1 record going into the game compared to 2-5 for the Wildcats. Both teams' defenses were on top of their game in the 10 inning contest, but in the end, the Cats took the victory when Jacob Jones smashed a two-out double scoring Austin Carter and Blaike Jones for the 7-6 win.
"It was a big win," said Brown. "Both teams had a lot of scoring opportunities. We left two or three runners on bases in six of 10 innings. We kept battling back, though and pulled it out."
Darren King opened the game on the mound for the Wildcats, forcing the Chicks into three straight ground-out plays to put Trumann in the box. Unfortunately, Blytheville returned the favor.
The second inning saw the first hit of the game as the Chicks DH, Fair, singled then worked his way to third before being left on base. The bottom of the second also saw the Wildcats bats come alive as Kyle Barker singled then stole second to give Trumann their first scoring opportunity. Then, after the Chicks pitcher, Ritchey, walked first Ethan Heavner then Craig Criss to load the bases. Unfortunately, the inning ended moments later on successive strikeouts to quell the scoring opportunity.
Finally the scoreboard began to light up as the Chicks took a 2-0 lead on runs by Ritchie and centerfielder, Autry. Carter, Blaike Jones and Barker immediately put the Wildcats up 3-2 as they each scored after gaining base on a walk, an error and a double respectively.
Blytheville tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning and when Trumann couldn't respond, the teams enter the fifth inning in a dead heat. At the end of the regulation seven innings, the game remained the same. Ditto the first extra inning.
Finally, in the top of the ninth, the Chicks managed to get across two runs for a 5-3 lead. Knowing they had to match the runs to keep the game alive, the Wildcats did just that as Carter and Jacob Jones scored when the left fielder errored a Craig Criss liner, allowing him to race to second. The bottom of the inning ended that way, 5-5, to send the game into the final 10th.
The Chick right fielder who had made the error, Arrilia, took a base when he was walked by Barker who had taken the mound in the sixth. He scored moments later to give Blytheville a 6-5 lead. Barker allowed no more runs, though, as he fanned the last two batters.
The game then ended with Jacob Jones' hit and the Wildcats had their third win of the season.
"Our pitching and hitting are getting a lot better," concluded Brown on the game. "If we keep playing like this and getting better we'll ready when the district tournament gets here."
Barker took the win with nine Ks, while giving up three runs on two hits and four walks. King also gave up three runs on four hits and three walks while fanning three.
Offensively, Blaike Jones was 2 for 6 with two runs while Jacob Jones scored one run while also hitting 2 for 6. Barker, Heavener and TeJaye Moye all hit singles in five at bats, Barker scoring once and getting a steal. Carter finished 1 for 6 with three runs scored.
Trumann 9, McCrory 2
Friday morning, Trumann returned to their field to take on the McCrory Jaguars. Much like the Chicks' game, neither team scored for the first two innings, but the Cats scored in three of the last four innings to take a 9-2 win.
"Preston (Jones) pitched a great game," said Brown. "Our hitting was good and the defense played a good game."
Even though neither team scored in the first two innings, the Wildcats got into scoring position in both innings, Blaike Jones singling then stealing second base and Moye following his single with two steals in the second. Neither player produced runs, however, and the Wildcats got to the bottom of the third still looking at a goose-egg on both sides of the scoreboard. Here the Cats began to make their run, though.
First, Blaike Jones hit a one-out single between the 5-6 hole then almost immediately stole second. Jacob Jones came up next and hit a single into left field, scoring Blaike Jones for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, looking at two outs, Heavener hit the same 5-6 hole as Jones had for a single scoring Jacob Jones. Moye then knocked in Heavener with a shot to deep left and the inning ended with the bases loaded two batters later, but the Cats leading 3-0.
Once again in the top of the fourth, the Jags went three-up and three-down putting Trumann back on offense at the top of the order. Lead-off hitter Carter just missed singling but failed to beat the throw form center.
Then three straight line drives by Blaike Jones, Jacob Jones and Barker loaded the bases. It was at this point that Heavener blasted the game's only home run, the ball bouncing off the top of the left field fence and over for a grand slam and 7-0 lead.
Both teams would add two more runs, but Heavner's blast all, but demoralized the Jaguars and the Wildcats got their fourth win of the season, 9-2.
Preston Jones got the win, pitching the first five innings, giving up no runs on three hits, while striking out three. Jarrett Prince pitched one inning giving up two runs on three hits while fanning four and walking two. Then in the seventh, first Quinn Holman then Jacob Jones walked two and struck out one to finish the game.
Blaike Jones, Jacob Jones and Moye led the offense going 3 for 4 each. Additionally, Blaike Jones had three runs and a steal while Jacob Jones also scored three runs and knocked in another, and Moye had a steal and an RBI. Heavner and Barker were both 2 for 4, Barker scoring a run, Heavener two runs, the homer and four RBIs. Carter closed out the hitting with a 1 for 4 effort.
Stuttgart 8, Trumann 4
Trumann's Xtra Innings win streak ended with McCrory as the Ricebirds scored six runs in the final two innings to take an 8-4 victory over the Wildcats at Trumann Saturday.
"We played decently at times," said Brown. "We made too many mistakes, though. We dropped six routine flies and we can't have this if we expect to win games. We pitched good enough to win, but the defense let us down."
Blaike Jones opened on the mound, pitching four innings, striking out five, while allowing two runs on five hits. Prince followed for two innings, giving up three runs on four hits and fanning one. Barker walked two and struck out one while with three runs scoring off of three hits.
Offensively, Prince led the hitting going 2 for 3 while Barker and Heavener were 1 for 3 scoring two and one runs respectively. Crew Parker was also 1 for 3 and Blaike Jones finished the day with a run scored.
