Cats win only two games of week

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Trumann's only game in a rain soaked week occurred last Tuesday when the Osceola Seminoles came to the Wildcats' home field for a double header. The Cats took the opportunity to improve their record to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the 4A-3 conference with two wins.

Trumann 10, Osceola 3

Austin Carter opened the scoring from his lead off position, giving the Cats an early 1-0 advantage. Then he as well as Kyle Barker, TeJay Moye and Ethan Heavener scored in the third inning to put the Wildcats up 5-0.

The Seminoles managed to get their only three runs of the game in the top of the fourth to close the score to 5-3. However, Carter scored third time in the bottom of the inning along with Jacob Jones to push Trumann back out to 7-3. Carter got his fourth run of the game in the bottom of the fifth along with Blaike Jones and Crew Parker to finish out the scoring 10-3.

Blaike Jones got the win in six innings, striking out 11 while giving up three runs on four hits and four walks.

Jacob Jones led the hitting with a 3 for 4 effort, scoring one run and knocking in five more. Carter finished 2 for 2 with four runs and one stolen base, while Barker and Heavener were both 2 for 3 Barker stealing two bases and scoring once, and Heavener scoring a run and an RBI. Blaike Jones and Moye were 1 for 2 with one run each Moye adding an RBI. And Jarrett Prince had a 1 for 4 day with one run and one RBI.

Trumann 7, Osceola 4

The Wildcats had a little harder time with the 'Noles the second time around as they had to come from behind to take a 7-4 victory.

Barker got the win in seven innings with three strikeouts, while giving up four runs on six hits and three walks.

Osceola took a 1-0 lead when their lead off man, Hughes slammed a double then was knocked in two batters later. The lead held through the second inning then in the third Jarrett Prince walked, then was driven in by Blaike Jones.

The Seminoles came back to score two more runs in the bottom of the third and take a 3-1 lead. It would be the last lead Osceola would have as Barker and Heavener scored in the fourth to tie the game 3-all.

Then in the fifth Blaike and Jacob Jones, Barker and Moye scored to go up 7-3.

The Seminoles scored once more in the sixth, but could get no more as the Cats got their 7-4 win.

Blike Jones was 3 for 3 with one run to lead the hitting, while Barker and Heavener were 2 for 3 each scoring two and one runs respectively. Preston Jones finished 2 for 2, Moye 1 for 2 and both Carter and Jacob Jones 1 for 3, Jones scoring once.

"We hit the ball a lot better," said coach Scott Brown of both games. "We pitched well and played some sound defense. Overall we just played well. We're still a way from where we need to be, but we're getting better each game. If the pitching holds up we should be in good shape by tournament time. We're tied for first on our side of the conference. We've just got to keep playing well. There's no one we can't beat."
